Introduction
After spending a few years as an elementary school teacher in urban areas, I became frustrated by the social inequities that created barriers for some of my students. I decided to pursue an academic career in the hopes of generating research, creating classes for educators, and engaging in service opportunities designed to unearth and confront social barriers that limit educational access. I am currently an associate professor in the Benerd School of Education at the University of the Pacific. In addition, I serve as a research affiliate of the Pullias Center for Higher Education at the University of Southern California and director of the Creating Opportunities Via Education program.
